Globalization, Anti-globalization and the Reconstruction of Chinese Folk Traditions:
A Study of the TV Series the Legend of Nezha
By exploring how The Legend of Nezha represents and reconstructs the myths of Sun Bird and Kuafu Pursues the Sun, this paper detects that the transformations and reconstructions of these myths have a close relationship with globalization and anti-globalization in contemporary China. To compete with and resist foreign cartoons, Chinese folk traditions are consciously utilized as important cultural resources to re-consolidate the national cultural root, promote the national virtues, rebuild the national identity, and win the domestic market. But the characters and motivations of this appropriation are different in some ways from the New Culture Movement at the beginning of 20th century and the romantic nationalism in 18th and 19th century in Europe. This case study shows that globalization may stimulate a new revival of folk traditions, instead of destroying them as many Chinese intellectuals concern.
