During the ninth session of UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held in November 2014 in Paris, China Folklore Society (CFS), an accredited non-governmental organization for Electoral Group IV, was appointed by the Committee as member of the newly established ‘Evaluation Body’ with a term of 3 years (Decision 9.COM 11).
The new consultative body to be known as the ‘Evaluation Body’ is composed of twelve members appointed by the Committee: six experts qualified in the various fields of the intangible cultural heritage representatives of States Parties non-Members of the Committee and six accredited non-governmental organizations, taking into consideration equitable geographical representation and various domains of intangible cultural heritage. In following cycles, the Evaluation Body shall be responsible for the evaluation of nominations for inscription on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding and on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, of proposed programmes, projects and activities that best reflect the principles and objectives of the Convention and of international assistance requests greater than US$25,000, in conformity with the Operational Directives for the Implementation of the Convention.
China Folklore Society was established in May 1983 with 6 specialized committee, 7 research bases, and 7 research centers (updated in January 2015). Since the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage was adopted in 2003, China Folklore Society has been active in the field of safeguarding intangible cultural heritages at regional, national and international levels. The Society was accredited by the Committee during the fourth General Assembly of the Convention in June 2012 (ITH/12/4.GA/6, NGO-90089).
