Dear Colleagues,
Scholarship in Epic Studies and Teaching Oral Traditions has made great progress in China and abroad, while scholars have accumulated both teaching experience and research insights that can be brought together for the benefit of scholarly dialogue and mutual exchange. Institute of Ethnic Literature (IEL) of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) has long been devoted to the study and safeguarding of ethnic minorities’ oral heritage as well as to the promotion of multilateral cooperation in related fields. With the support of the Bureau of Scientific Research Management (BSRM) and the Bureau of International Cooperation (BIC) of the CASS, IEL and its Oral Traditions Research Center are launching a long-term interdisciplinary project in order to reinforce professional training and international discourse for the sustainable development of epic studies and oral tradition research. This project is now known as the “IEL International Seminar Series on Epic Studies and Oral Tradition Research (hereafter to be referred to as the IEL-ISSESOTR”).
The time has come to welcome participants and teachers for the first IEL-ISSESOTR, which will be held in Beijing this June. You are cordially invited to join us.

Module II: Youth Humanities Workshop on Oral Poetics
(June 15-18, 2009)
As an extension of the training activities, Dr. Aaron Phillip Tate has been invited to organize an interactive workshop in order to discuss core issues in the field of oral tradition research. Dr. Tate has been working on comparative oral and lyric studies in ancient Greek, Serbo-Croatian, and related traditions for over a decade. He has studied under John Miles Foley, worked at the Center for Studies in Oral Tradition at the University of Missouri, been a Fulbright researcher at the Croatian Institute of Ethnology and Folklore, completed a PhD in Greek, Homeric Greek, and Indo-European linguistics at Cornell University, and given numerous papers on Greek, Slavic, and comparative oral tradition-related topics. Although IEL scholars and M.A./Ph.D. students of the GSCASS will be the main participants, you are more than welcome to take part in the forthcoming discussions in order to share your own experiences with Dr. Tate as well as our other young folklore scholars-in-training.
Workshop Format:
Lecture series with group discussions

Each lecture will discuss one thematic issue in 150 minutes. Dr. Tate will have a maximum of 60 minutes to talk about his prepared topic, after which the participants will have 30 minutes to raise questions and make comments, followed by 40-50 minutes of general discussion.
To enhance participation, graduate students are especially encouraged to raise questions and make short presentations on subjects related to the themes of the workshop.

II. WORKING LANGUAGES
English and Chinese.
Module I
Consecutive interpretation between Chinese and English will be provided for English presentations (1-2/8;4-5/8);
No interpretation will be provided for all the Chinese presentations (3/8; 6/8-8/8).
Module II
Having given the priority to English training and practice, consecutive interpretation between Chinese and English is restricted to the discussion, according to the instructor's request and participants' responding at the workshop.
III. REGISTRATION
The First IEL-ISSESOTR is organized by IEL, and partly sponsored by CASS Presidential Funds. All participants do not need to pay registration fees. IEL will facilitate coffee break times, as well as provide light meal for launch time during the period of the present programmes. Due to the limited budget, all participants should seek their own funding for local accommodation and domestic and international transportation.
