Course Description

This class is intended to provide an introduction to changes in media over time; we will also consider moments of "transition" (and regression) from one media form to another. Some weeks will focus on more theoretical questions, such as the changing relationship of media and human consciousness, or the concept of "revolution" in media change, while others will focus on particular moments of transition and their social, political, cultural, and economic implications. We will proceed in a roughly chronological order. Our goal is not to create the illusion of a complete survey of media change in the West over the past two thousand years (an impossible, and thankless, assignment!). Rather, the class should open up new perspectives, primarily historical, that will add depth to your thinking about comparative media today. Some of you may also glean ideas and comparisons from our work together that will be useful for your master's thesis.

Course Requirements

At our first meeting, each participant will sign up for a class presentation on a theme suggested by our common readings. Presentations will take into account required and supplemental reading for each class session. In addition, students are expected to read carefully the required readings for each week, and come to class prepared to share thoughtful questions and comments with the group. Lastly, each seminar member will prepare a final paper of approximately twenty pages in length. In certain well-defined situations, a substantial digital project may, with the consent of the instructor, be substituted for the final paper. The last two class sessions will be devoted to oral presentations of these projects. Instructions for oral presentations and the final paper will be handed out in class.

Grading
Assignments and responsibilities will be weighted as follows in determining the final grade:

ACTIVITIES PERCENTAGES
Class Presentation 30%

Weekly Class Participation 20%

Final Paper / Project 40%

Oral Presentation of Final Project 10%

Instructions for Class Presentations Each student will sign up for one class presentation; since there are more students than class sessions, some of you will present jointly. The purpose of the presentations is to frame the issues in the readings that week, and relate these themes to previous sessions. In addition, the presenter will report on at least one of the supplemental readings listed on the syllabus.
Presenters should plan to speak between twenty and thirty minutes at the beginning of class. If you exceed thirty minutes, I may cut you off. DO NOT READ FROM A PREPARED TEXT! Prepare an outline of your remarks prior to class, which you will distribute to everyone in the seminar via e-mail not later than 3 PM the day of our class meeting. You are free to organize your presentations in any manner you wish, but at a minimum you should do the following:
  • Summarize the issues and debates raised in the readings
  • Summarize at least one supplemental reading (you may do more if you wish), and relate its themes and arguments to our general reading for the week
  • Frame several broad questions to initiate our class discussion

Examples of Student Work Presentations on these subjects are quite rich in images which cannot be published here for copyright reasons. Some students also created notes to accompany their presentation; several of these are available below.

  Final Project
The final project for this class is a twenty-page, double-spaced essay on one of the topics listed below. In some cases, with the consent of the instructor, it may be possible to substitute a substantial, well-defined project prepared in a different genre or medium.
The goal of the project is to allow you to think broadly and synthetically about the class material we cover this term or, alternatively, to consider one set of issues in some depth. Please submit a hard copy version of your paper. I will ask you to submit a one-paragraph proposal for your final project in class on Session 9. The final project is due in the instructor's office no later than the first day of Final week.
The in-class presentations for your final projects will take place between Sessions 12 and 13, and on Session 13. The presentations will be graded; their evaluation will count for ten percent of your final grade, as per the syllabus. We will allot thirty minutes for the discussion of each project. You should plan to speak for 10-15 minutes, followed by discussion with your classmates. Please present your project in as detailed and coherent a fashion as possible in the time allowed. (You may wish to practice your presentation in advance, so that you do not exceed the 10-15 minute limit.)
The goals of the presentations are two-fold. First, this will be your opportunity to tap the collective wisdom of the class as you prepare your project. Second, I suspect the variety of projects will provide us with a fairly comprehensive overview of the issues and ideas we have discussed during the course of the term.
Topics
  • Drawing on examples from our readings and discussions, evaluate the concept of "revolution" as an organizing principle for media transition. You must consider the "print revolution" of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and you must compare it either to the changes brought on by the introduction of electricity in the nineteenth century, or to the "digital revolution" today. In other words, does "revolution" adequately explain changes in media in Europe 500 years ago, and throughout the world in the nineteenth century or today? If not, what alternative model of media change would you propose?

  • Write an essay in which you consider the readings for one class session in depth. In addition to the common readings, you must also read and consider at least four of the supplemental readings. How do the readings frame the main issues? Is there consensus or disagreement among the authors? What are the future avenues of research? (N.B.: You may not write on the readings from the week of your class presentation.)

  • Propose a topic of your own devising, based on our joint work this semester. I reserve the right of final approval. You may wish to consult me about your proposal prior to submitting it on Session 9.

The William and Flora Hewlett
