摘要
Within the contemporary context of global interdependencies, performative arts have been used as strategic devices for social mobilization and as a means to represent and perform modern national histories. This study investigates the relations between artistic performance, power, and identity in China. It examines the historical, performative, and rhetorical processes by which the arts are used to recreate a vision of China as a historically multi-ethnic and cosmopolitan nation on the contemporary stage. Based on ethnographic and historical research, it focuses specifically on the Dunhuang bihua yuewu, a multifaceted genre of music, dance, and dramatic performances that was created in the twentieth century and based primarily on artifacts excavated from Chinas northwestern frontier metropolis, Dunhuang. As a number of ethnomusicologists have demonstrated, musicians, choreographers, and playwrights often utilize historical materials in their performances to construct connections between the past and the present. Dunhuang bihua yuewu brings together diverse historical and cultural elements into one performance genre that has been institutionalized as both modern Chinese classical dance and cultural heritage. The study documents and analyzes the historical sources, creative processes, staging, performances, and discourse about the genre based on documents, interviews, and participant observation. It highlights the multiple actors and institutions that serve as the constitutive forces that performatively represent concepts of "Chineseness" through music, dance and drama.
