In 840, the Uighurs Khanate (744-840) dispersed, a major branch escaped to Xinjiang and the Hexi Corridor. Since then, the Uighur Buddhist culture developed rapidly under the strong influence of the Indian and Chinese one. They used the Uighur Script to translated and put down the Buddhist canons. However, since 10th century Uighur Buddhists became Muslim step by step, the Uighur script was discarded, and the books written in this script were destroyed deliberately.
Since the end 19th century and the early 20th century, archaeological teams from various countries discovered numerous old manuscripts, xylography and other historical relics dating to the 9th-15th centuries from the ruins of the ancient caves, temples, and the abandoned cities of the Dunhuang, Turpan, and other places. Thousands of the fragments had been published, which serve as the main source of the ancient Uighur Buddhism and culture for our studies.
According to the Uighur fragments what had been published at home and abroad, Indian Culture, especially Buddhism excerted a great influence on the Uighur literature. The essay includes the following seven parts.
I: Indian Culture Spreading to the Uighurs and Its Influence;
II: Uighur Versions of Stories of Buddha’s Life;
