Abstract: Using the fieldwork data collected in a north China village from 2007 to 2010, this paper aims to explore the survival strategies of people with chronic illness from the theoretical perspective of illness experience. According to the interview data and participant observation, the chronically ill will take all kinds of measures to know, cope and manage chronic illness at home, rather than passively adapt to the impacts of the diseases. Meanwhile, their survival strategies are constrained by the wider socio-cultural factors, in other words, whether they can make more choices depends not only on their ability and action, but also on the social structure, local culture and health policy in which they live.
