Yi Nationality Literature Online Bibliography
Based on Bibliographies in Chinese by Bamo Qubumo
The Yi Nationality (Yizu) is a large ethnic minority group from southwest China. With over seventy subgroups in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Guangxi (groups which go by a large number of self-appellations, such as Nuosu, Nisupo, Lolopo, Lipo, Sani, A’xi, Azhe, etc.), the Yi now number close to seven million. As well as rich oral traditions, the Yi have a large body of written literature (often “oral-connected”) composed in a number of local versions of an ancient writing system. Most of the texts use a five-morpheme poetic line and were composed and utilized by priests known as bimo (or by local equivalents of the term). For recent information in English on the Yi, see works edited by Stevan Harrell (which include articles by many researchers on the Yi both within and outside China).
The following English listings are based on recent bibliographical information complied in an extensive Chinese work on Yi nationality traditional oral and written literature by Bamo Qubumo of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing. Her work, published in 2000, is entitled: Ying ling yu shihun: Yizu gudai jingdian shixue yanjiu [Eagle spirit and poetic soul: study of Yi nationality classical poetics]. Beijing: Shehui kexue yuan chubanshe, ISBN: 7-80149-294-3/G-050.
The listings (translated by Wu Shan), are offered as an aid for those interested in becoming more familiar with the vast (and mostly unfamiliar) world of Yi oral and oral-connected literatures. As the English translation is a work in progress, please note that some entries (usually those with transliterated Yi words in the titles, which are often phrases in Yi or the names of local folk tunes (such as Meige), persons, or places) are still incomplete or left untranslated. Some entries, marked with “*” are under revision but still may be of some use, if only to point the way towards a potential source. Users are encouraged to substitute their own bibliographic styles for the one used here.
Part I contains basic sources on Yi oral and written traditional literatures. Part II has a number of sources from other traditions (non-Yi) which were a part of Bamo Qubumo’s study. Sources in Part III are from other areas of Yi studies published in Chinese.
The accompanying photographs were taken by Kang Enda (or Mark Bender) in the mid to late 1980s, in the Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province.
