CALLING FOR PARTICIPATION
September 26, 2010
Dear Colleagues,
Scholarship in Epic Studies and Oral Tradition research has made great progress in China and abroad, while scholars have accumulated both teaching experience and research insights that can be brought together for the benefit of scholarly dialogue and mutual exchange. Institute of Ethnic Literature (IEL) of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) has long been devoted to the study and safeguarding of ethnic minorities’ oral heritage as well as to the promotion of multilateral cooperation in related fields. In June 2009, with the support of the Bureau of Scientific Research Management (BSRM) and the Bureau of International Cooperation (BIC) of the CASS, IEL and its Oral Traditions Research Center launched a long-term interdisciplinary project, known as the “IEL International Seminar Series on Epic Studies and Oral Tradition Research” (abbreviated as “IEL-ISSESOTR”), so as to reinforce professional training and international discourse for the sustainable development of epic studies and oral tradition research.
The time has come to welcome participants and teachers for “The 2nd IEL International Seminar Series on Epic Studies and Oral Tradition Research”, which will take place in Beijing from 18 to 22, October, 2010. You are cordially invited to join us.
The principal speakers are:
Prof. Karl Reichl from the University of Bonn, Germany and Dr. Aida Vidan from Harvard University, USA, whose academic contribution correspondingly involve major subjects in Turkic epic traditions and European epic traditions (ancient English, Medieval West Europe, and South Slavic traditions in particular);
Prof. Chao Gejin (Chogjin, Mongolian), Prof. Lang Ying, and Prof. Adil Zhumaturdu (Kirgiz) from CASS, whose expertise respectively devote to Mongolian epics, Turkic epics (Kirgiz epic tradition in particular), and general theories of epic studies and oral tradition research.
