The word "myth" has many --often conflicting--meanings attached to it, all of which have some validity. On the level of everyday usage a myth is a false story or belief. The common meaning applies in some sense to hallowed religious stories as well. For most people it is a myth that walking under a ladder brings bad luck. But it is also fair to say that for a non-Jew and probably for many practicing Jews, the parting of the Red Sea is a myth, or that for non-Christians and many Christians, the Resurrection is a myth. In this sense a myth is a story that is outside the scope of our actual experience and therefore, literally, impossible or false. Seas do not part and humans are not resurrected. The Red Sea myth and the Resurrection myth, however, are very different from the under the ladder myth because, for the cultures to which they belong, they convey some significant truth about the relationship between human beings and the source of being.
On the level of everyday usage a myth is a false story or belief.
But it is also fair to say that for a non-Jew and probably for many practicing Jews, the parting of the Red Sea is a myth, or that for non-Christians and many Christians, the Resurrection is a myth.
The Red Sea myth and the Resurrection myth, however, are very different from the under the ladder myth because, for the cultures to which they belong, they convey some significant truth about the relationship between human beings and the source of being.
