Abstract: Over the last three decades, China’s scholarly institution has undergone a fundamental change. However, ingenious thoughts that will leave marks on scholarly history have not come out as profusely as expected. The genuine reason, this author holds, probably lies with the scholars themselves. Those who graduated in early 1980s seem to have exhausted their creativity and show no signs of further breakthroughs. In the eyes of the younger generation, the “renowned scholars” of the older generation have mostly become obstacles. Scholarship in humanities has taken the hardest hit, since what really count are such “mechanistic” indices as the amount of publication in pretigious journals, quotation rates, conformity to scholarship norms, etc. rather than the distinterested comments and praises among scholars. However, the younger generation itself is no more promising. Younger scholars need more time to gain their status and more energy to fend off various social distractions. Even worse, they live in a relatively “mediocre” time which has weakened their “political ambition” in scholarship.
