Purpose and Procedure

(1) Purpose
The aim of 2012 term of the ISCWP’s “Beijing Roundtable on Contemporary Philosophy” workshop series is to have an in-depth critical examination of how the vantage point and methodology of comparative philosophy can effectively serve as one general methodological approach in philosophy for the sake of development of contemporary philosophy, through a critical reflection on the methodological strategy of the ISCWP in its several collective projects in the past decade since its inception in 2002.
Especially since the first decade of this century, comparative philosophy, as understood and practiced in a philosophically interesting way, has undergone significant development in its identity, coverage and mission. Comparative philosophy, instead of being a local subfield of philosophy, has become one exciting general front of philosophical exploration that is primarily concerned with how distinct approaches and resources from different philosophical traditions (both culture/region-associated and style/orientation-associated philosophical traditions) can learn from and constructively engage with each other to jointly contribute to our understandings and treatments of a series of philosophical issues and topics in various areas of philosophy, which can be jointly concerned through appropriate philosophical interpretation and a broader philosophical vantage point.
(2) Pre-workshop preparation
A number of materials, which explain the methodological strategy of several ISCWP collective projects for the sake of development of contemporary philosophy, will be sent to the core participants (presenting critics and discussants) by May 25 (Friday). The presenting critics will send their short critique pieces (for 15 minute presentation) by June 14 (Monday). Then the relevant materials will be sent to all registered participants by June 15 (Friday) for warming-up preview.
(3) Workshop format
A précis of the “constructive-engagement” methodological strategy, as carried out in several ISCWP collective projects in the past decade, will be first presented as the target of critical reflection to explore how the vantage point and methodology of comparative philosophy can effectively serve as one general methodological approach in philosophy for the sake of development of contemporary philosophy, through evaluating the achievements, examining theoretic challenges, further elaborating significant methodological points, and expanding exploration in need.
Then about six presenting critics, who either have their own writings on relevant methodological issues or have recently focused on the issue under examination, will present their respective critique pieces: each has a 30 minute slot which consists of 15-minute presentation and 15-minute critical discussion (the précis presenter first gives a short reply, and then discussants and others offer critical comments).
(4) Participation and contact
Any interested ISCWP members and other interested colleagues are welcome to participate in this workshop. [To receive the relevant workshop materials for warming-up preview, prospective participants needs to make (free) registration by June 15.]
