本论文的研究对象是中国华北半干旱黄土高原上的普通窑洞民居和相关民俗，以山西省吕梁西部地区柳林县的三个窑洞村落为调查点，在一个较小的范围内，对窑洞民居进行个案研究，在较为全面、细致的民俗志描述的基础上，探讨民居民俗研究的若干理论问题。
本文首设绪论，正文分四章。第一章“吕梁西部地区窑洞民居的村落居住形式”，把窑洞民居放到村落人文环境中，考察聚落中的民居分布与特定生态环境和社会环境的关系，提出土壤、地貌和水源对窑洞村落形态的强制性影响，同时分析家族、庙宇所建构的村落社会空间和信仰空间。第二章“吕梁西部地区窑洞民居的类型”，主要结合建筑和居住者的两方面，描述吕梁西部窑洞的整体形态、细部形式，以及住户和居住方式类型，分析窑洞民居在物质形态方面所包含的民俗文化内容。第三章“吕梁西部地区窑洞民居的修建者习俗”，考察当地窑洞的主要修建者木匠、泥匠、风水先生等民间匠人，指出他们是窑洞文化的创造者和传承人，他们的技艺传承服务于窑洞的传承，并形成修建活动圈。第四章“吕梁西部地区窑洞民居的仪式”，描述窑洞居住者的精神生活，考察窑洞仪式所体现的文化史意义、空间观、生态观和社会功能。
论文以窑洞建筑为主线，以窑洞居住者的生活为主体，由外到内，由形态到布局再到人文活动，从民俗学的角度，挖掘吕梁西部地区普通窑洞的文化意义。
【外文摘要】
Abstract This research is an intensive case study on cave dwellings located in Liulin County in Shanxi Province's Luliang area. Based on comprehensive and detailed recordings of the cave dwellings and related folkways on the semi-arid Loess Plateau in Northern China, this study discusses several theoretical issues in folklore study.
This dissertation has four chapters besides the Introduction and Conclusion.
Chapter One examines the distribution of cave dwellings and how it relates to specific ecological and social environments. It puts cave dwellings in the humane environment of village community and suggests that the loam, the landforms and the headwaters have compelling effects on the style of cave dwelling village community.
At the same time, the clan and temples decide the social and religion style of the villages. Chapter Two discusses the different types of cave dwellings in the western Luliang area, from both the builders'and the dwellers'perspectives. It describes the overall structure and local styles of these caves as well as the living styles of their dwellers and hence provides insights into the local folklore. Chapter Three studies the designers and builders of these cave dwellings. These craftsmen such as carpenters, plasterers and Fengshui masters are considered creators as well as inheritors of the cave-dwelling culture. Their craftsmanship contributes to but at the same time is confined by the heritage of the cave-dwelling culture. Chapter Four focuses on the rituals held in these cave dwellings, which are regarded as the indication of the spiritual life of cave dwellers. The cultural significance, social functions, and space and ecological ideologies signified by these rituals are discussed.
This dissertation thoroughly examines the styles and distribution of cave dwellings as well as the life of cave dwellers. It explores the cultural significance of cave dwellings in the western Luliang area from the angle of folklore study.
