Social Science Translation Project
Guidelines for the Translation of Social Science Texts is the product of the
Social Science Translation Project (SSTP), which brought together a group of translators, editors, and social scientists to discuss problems arising from the translation of a variety of texts that employ social-scientific concepts. Organized by the ACLS with financial support from the Ford Foundation, the SSTP met several times over the course of two years (2004-05). Its goal was to demonstrate the key role that translations play in the field and to promote communication in the social sciences across language boundaries by providing practical advice to people who commission, edit, and use translations of social science texts in their professional activities. To this end the guidelines are available in eight languages (see below).
Members of the SSTP regard the guidelines as a work in progress or, better, as an invitation to comment and further investigation. We encourage downloading and distributing the text widely, and we look forward to reader feedback. Please send comments to the SSTP co-chairs: Michael Henry Heim,
heim@humnet.ucla.edu, and Andrzej W. Tymowski,
atymowski@acls.org.
